Month 2 – Railroad Crossing
Welcome to the second block in the River Heritage Block-of-the-Month Mystery Quilt! There is a variety of Railroad Crossing quilt blocks. This one is a simple, but stunning version. I think this block could make a great stash-busting, scrappy quilt all by itself!
Railroad Crossing uses dark, medium, and light fabrics. It is an easy block made with two four-patches and two half-square triangles.
From light fabrics: From medium fabrics:
1 – 7-inch square 1 – 7-inch square
4 – 3 ½ inch squares
From dark fabrics:
4 – 3 1/2-inch squares RST = right sides together
Draw a diagonal line on the reverse side of the 7-inch light square. Lay the light square on the 7-inch medium square, matching edges, RST. Using a quarter-inch foot, sew ¼ inch on each side from the drawn line. Cut on the line. Press each half square triangle towards the darker fabric. Square/trim each block to 6 ½ inches.
Chain-piece the light 3 ½ inch squares onto a dark 3 ½ inch square, RST. Press to the dark. Lay out the pieces according to the block picture.
Turn the top row down onto the bottom row, RST, matching seams and pin. Stitch across the top. Press four-patches open. Trim each block to 6 ½ inches.
Lay out all the pieces according to the picture. Turn the top right four-patch onto the half-square to its left. Stitch. Press to the half-square. Repeat with the bottom section, turning the half-square onto the four-patch and press to the half-square.
Turn the top row down onto the bottom row, RST, matching seams and pinning. Stitch across the top. Press seam open.
Square block to 12 ½ inches. You have made your Railroad Crossing!
